Just like the word "we" is pronounced. Haven't you seen the tv ad where the two chineese guys come up to the door with the Wii and say "Wii have come to play"? haha, tell your boyfriend not to feel bad, my mom and me had a hard time figuring it out at first!

It's We, as in the pronoun.
Nintendo wants the Wii to be a console where a group of people can play together, so they called it a Wii, as in We play together.
