The civil rights movement in the 1960's. JFK assassination, The Civil War between 1862-1865, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and The World Trade Centers. The Depression starting in 1929 which spawned The New Deal, the WPA and other developments that pulled the US out of the depression. Also, the first man to fly into orbit and then to land on the moon all change the perception of our country to others around the world as leaders in technology and as foreward thinkers.

revolutionary war, indian wars, war of 1812, civil war, spanish american war, world war on and two, korean war, viet nam war, war on poverty, civil right war, war against war, oh, and did i mention our current war? i mustn't forget the war on freedom that bush has been fighting since he got elected.
seems the only way to get anything done in this country is to declare a war. that way lot's of money can be made by those who supply the materials to fight the war, while the rest of us starve! or die fighting the war we never wanted started in the first place! of course, it is good for business.
