number lock on, then hold down the alt key and type on the number pad, after you type your number release the alt key. example: alt key + 1 on the number pad will result in-☺
here are the numbers 1-20 with the alt key-
☺☻♥♦♣♠•◘○◙♂♀♪♫☼►◄↕‼¶

so the heart is alt key and the number 3 on the number pad
