At 11 years of age when he was abducted, he was at an impressionable age when fear could have been a determining factor for him staying qiet for survival. I would hope and pray, but doubt, that he wasn't sexually abused. I would like to think the creep that took him from his family was just a lonely man that wanted a child to look after and take care of. Unfortunately, I really think we will come to learn of a more dreadful nightmare that Shawn Hornbeck probably endured for the past 4 years. My knowledge of the Stockholm Syndrome is only what I have heard on the news, it is hard for me to imagine that Shawn couldn't have or didn't try to leave considering how he was left alone for some periods of time. But we don't know what kind of mind control this creep wielded over him. It does appear that he was taken care of from a standpoint of getting haircuts, being fed, he had piercings (which we don't know if he chose or was chosen for him), he had a bicycle and was allowed to play with others. It is hard to imagine how he must have explained his family life to the young ones he played with, considering he didn't go to school. One thing I can point out here is that everything I read after 9/11 about the terrorists observations of Americans, we are relatively unattentive to our surroundings and unwilling to report what seems to be suspicious. Therefore, we could have terrorists and child molesters living next door and they will succeed at their chosen endeavors because we no longer have that know and love your neighbor attitude of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Most troubling in this story is that the abductor chose rural areas where kids are supposed to feel safe to carry out his kidnappings. No place is safe anymore.

It was a true miracle. I still can't understand with all the access to the outside world why he didn't try to get to his parents. And the kidnapper, there is something fishy about that too b/c he let the boy out to go visit neighbors. Also, the neighbors, could they not see something weird about him not being in school? Where I live, the whole town is so full of busy bodies you can't sneeze without some authority being contacted. I probably always will think that this is a very unusual case.

I think it is too sobering, sad, and horrific a thing for people to make idle gossip over it. He and his family should be left alone to rebuild their lives and others shouldn't turn it into water-cooler gossip.

Well I think the boy wanted to stay there. Because he had many chances to leave and call someone, but didn't
