You should check this site out to learn the proper way to care for him, so he thrives and has a chance at living his 5+ years. http://www.firsttankguide.net/betta.php

He probably seems miserable because he IS! Bettas HATE bowls. The water always stays too cold, they are all alone, the water isnt filtered or aerated, and above all else, they can usually see themselves in the curved glass and think it's another male betta and they get stressed! they really should be in a tank with a heater and a filter. They can even be kept with some other community tank fish. And if you used sink water, I hope you put in the dechlorinator drops first otherwise he seems miserable because he is about to DIE! get some drops ASAP or bottled water!!!

Oh, and one more thing--you can't put 2 bettas together or they will kill each other. That's why they're called Siamese Fighting Fish!

You can not keep two male Bettas together, they will fight to the death. Use water that has had the chlorine taken out of...buy the treatment at WalMart. The fish is not lonely. I have two Bettas in the same bowl (bought at WalMart) but there is a divider down the middle, they can still see each other. I clean their little tank once a week. I just use room temperature water. I usually keep a gallon plastic jug of water at all times. This way it is at room temp.I have both of my Bettas for over a year. Good Luck!

Actually, bettas can not be in a tank with other bettas. If you have a female she will mate with the male and then kill him. Two male bettas attack and the stronger one kills the weaker betta. So do not get a friend for your betta! Also, don't use water straight from the sink. You should pour bottled water (spring water or drinking water) into the tank. If you DO use water from the tap, make sure you boil it first to get rid of any impurities. However, if you do boil it, let the water get down to room temperature before pouring it into the fish tank - otherwise you will boil your fish.

I got my first 36 goldfish before most of them died because oif my cousin sucked up all the water until the point only 8 goldfish was alive. Anyways, my goldfish has this travel sickness where they were imported from China to San Diego, that's why I ask the store owner how long they have been there if they have been in the pet store for more than 3-5 days I would take them. So I can assure myself they won't die the next couple of days, healthy & they are peaceful with other group of fish in the tank :D
