and just for personal info, if the batteries DO seem crusty, etc. from contents leaking out, is that dangerous at all? how to handle that?

how can you tell if they're alkaline or acid based? it's a basic AA battery...

The older type of batteries are indeed made with acid and are corrosive. You should dispose of them carefully.

The more typical batteries today are alkaline based and the chemicals should not eat through the case. There is a disposal problem however, in that they are made with small amounts of mercury. The amount in each battery is small and not an issue by itself. However millions of these batteries are piling up in landfills creating a mercury pollution problem. Battery recycling is now mandatory in some countries.
