As a manager for a world wide chain, I found it is best if you treat your employees well. Make them feel that are part of the team. Give each employee a specific duty. Example: for me ,I have each of my employees a certain area of the store. It is there responsibility to keep it clean and stocked, that includes making up the order. Also give them some incentive to stay, like give them a opportunity to make assistant manager or manager. don't make it seem like they are going to be stuck as a clerk forever.
Always keep an open door policy. Always be truth full with them. And if an employee has an idea to help increase sales, don't ignore them if it a bad idea. Praise them for and explain why it wont work. If it does work then give them the credit for it, when upper management praises you.

Be fair and consistant with all your employees. Do not treat anyone as a favorite. When you do evaluations do not just give great ratings if they deserve it or not. Give peopel something to work for. Reward successes and reprehend with failures. Do it all reasonably and be honest with your people. Do not let anyone pull the tricks of turning you into their friend.

the employer-employee is a relationship.
In any relationship, it's about understanding.
Understanding requires listening followed by action.
Who are the employees?
What are there needs, and concerns?
What motivates them, security, money, enjoyment, accountability, leadership?
Then tailor the message to meet those needs.
It's not just about give them more money, it's about understanding what motivates them from the inside.

Treat your employees with respect. Give the trust unless they give you reason to not......and praise them when they have done a good job.
If an employee is a happy employee he/she will stay so much longer.
