If I am not mistaken, there are arowanas from 4 continents.

The black arowana's from south America, this is pretty rare (where I am in Singapore), the adult looks like the silver arrowana except that the angle of the head/mouth is less sharp when seen from the side. The young of the black arowana is very distinct from the silver, it have a dark black stripe along it lateral line along it's whole body. I read that this species is also not commonly found in the US.

The silver arowana is from Africa. This is probably the most commonly found everywhere and the least expensive of all the arowana in the market.

The Jardini also called the pearl arowana is found in Australia, it's quite common in South East Asia and kept as pet by some here. I am not sure if this species is common in the States or Europe. In Australia the Jardini is target as sportfish by fisherman downunder.

The golden arowana is found in South East Asia and it is protected under CITIES. There are actually many sub-speices grouped under the golden arowana. There are the Red Tail Gold (RTG), Red, Cross-Back, yellow tail, green, Red (2nd class aka 1.5 red). I could have miss out one or two. All this sub group looks different from each other and can be easily identified by hobbist. In SEA (Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia) there are many farms that breeds the golden arowanas. Only farm breed arowana can be sold or exported in these countries. All farm breed arrowana have a micro-chip embeded in their body and each fish carries a unique serial number and certificate tied to the micro chip in it's body.

Worldwide I believe the silver arowana would be the most widely distributed. In SEA the golden arowana would be most sort after.
