A great movie is like a great beauty; it's in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure movie critics can always try and invent some "objective set of rules" by which to dissect/judge a movie; and who am I to argue with people who make a living at it! I, on the other hand, know what I like/love when I see it --- and that to me is the acid test of a movie; regardless of what others think. Actually, every movie that I've ever loved has induced two very distinct emotions in me: 1) Almost from the very beginning I start hoping that it wouldn't end any time soon (e.g. The Godfather part I, 2001, Star Wars, Casablanca, Amadeus, The good, the bad, and the ugly, It's a wonderful life, Blade Runner, The Graduate, The English Patient, Citizen Kane, Thunderball, The Boat, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Return of the Pink Panther (w/ Petter sellers), Pride and Prejudice (the latest production); ............ the list is LONG, including MANY foreign and low budget movies); 2) The movie stays with me / makes a lasting impression on me --- and, often, I end up watching it repeatedly over the years. .

There are quite a few...that is a big area. Practically every movie ever made seems to be an action film unless it's a chick flick. But, off of the top of my head:
The Matrix 1,2,3
The Patriot
Braveheart
Saw 1,2,3
