This could be good IF you had a first edition, first printing and the printing wasn't that big. IF the typo was caught and fixed for subsequent printings, then the book you have now would become collectible.
This probably isn't the situation you find yourself in, is it? I found a typo on a dust cover for an older book, but I can't find the info on whether or not it's rare or they were just all printed that way.
You know, I'm a former teacher, and when a student found a mistake I made, I did give them extra credit. :)
And I saw the feedback from another - his friend finding a mistake in a textbook. I would say if it was that type of book, you could find yourself receiving something as well. Come to think of it, they got off cheap - $50 probably didn't even pay for the textbook he bought!
I read a Lois Lowry book where they interchanged singer and signer, and it DID make a difference. I had to go back and check. Who knows? Maybe you've found yourself a career as an editor!

Just feel good in the fact that you knew it was a typo. Once the book has been printed and released, it is too late to do anything. Most publishers would probably know by now that the typo is there and it will be corrected should the book go into a subsequent printing. If the book turns out to be a valuable book someday, the typo will distiguish the ''first printing'' from the others.

I doubt you can get anything more than a thanks (if even) from the publisher. I find many errors in all of the books I read, it drives me insane, but I won't waste my time sending it to the publisher. I'm sure they get tons of letters or emails telling them of some sort of mistake in their books all the time. They can't reward everyone. Not only that, but there are probably not very many books that do not have errors in them. This book I was reading last week used the word "deader" in a sentence, which I thought was odd (especially because this book was a historical novel, written by a very highly educated Classics major), so I told my english teacher about it. She didn't give me extra credit or anything, she just said to bring it in and we could use it as an example of errors authors make in books.

I would normally just correct the typo in the book myself. If I could, I would notify the publisher. They should know the typo. Good luck.

you don't get anything out of it except the satisfaction of knowing that you found it.
You could try sending it to the publisher or author. They won't make a correction unless the book goes into a second printing.

Write to the publisher. I had a friend who found a mistake in a textbook once and he got $50.00. Of course that was an advanced Trigonometry text and he was a genius, but it never hurts to ask. There must be contact information in the front of the book.

No, they won't give you anything. Fixing that one typo would cause them to lose money. No one will change their mind about the book because of a typo.

A lot of books have typos in them. It's just something that happens. I doubt you could get anything from it.

I doubt it, but I'm sure they keep track and fix these things for future publications of the book. I've never read a book that didn't have typos, mispellings, etc.
