From what I've read, there are two IUD's; the copper one which is left in your body for 10 years and then there is the one for 5 years, which releases hormones.

That depends on your circumstances:

Copper IUDs
-can make periods heavier and more painful (so not recommended for women with really heavy periods)
-as you say, last longer
-if you're in a situation where you have to pay (eg US, here in the UK they're free on the NHS) then I think from what I've heard the copper ones are about 20% the price of a hotmonal one
-typical failure rate 0.8%

Hormonal IUDs
-you might not want artificial hormones in your body
-make periods lighter or stop altogether
-are slightly wider than copper ones, so will hurt more going in
-typical failure rate 0.1%

(for comparison, other typical rates are male sterilisation 0.15%, pills 8%, condom 15%

I have the copper IUD and love it. both hold the same risks if your non-smoker but if you smoke stick to the copper one.

the copper IUD
has no hormones
last 10 years
may make bleed heaver at first (for my body to get over it about 6 months)

the hormonal IUD
last 5 years
can make your flow less
you should not smoke
can change your moods

keep in mind that IUD should only be used by women that are monogamous relation ships because is in your uterus and the strings hang down so if get a STD it can cause so much more damage.

IUD's should not be used in who have had tubal pregnancy/s.

I have the Mirena (five year hormones). I no longer have heavy painful periods, or PMS. I do have spotting but to me that was a great trade off. Which is best is really a matter of opinion and that would be your choice to make. I made the choice to get Mirena because the copper one could possibly cause you to bleed more. My Doctor said the Mirena would be best for me. I'm very happy I got it.

the copper one is the best. I've had mine for 6 years. No problems. Also no hormones.

there are two versions of the plastic one... one with our hormones can stay in your body for the 10 years and then the one with hormones for five years. if you read the onformation that comes with ALL IUDs... none are really "saef" they all have the risk of puncturing your uterus and or causing scaring which can cause you not to have children later in life... or at the bad end of teh spectrum...cause you to bleed out.
