A Conservative wishes to preserve social functions and traditions that conserve a 'civil' society. They like to stick with what works.
A Liberal seeks the greatest freedom from rules and traditions. (Bear in mind that true Liberals tend to be strong supporters of freedoms like gun ownership. They are not to be confused with Leftists)
A Leftist seeks to eliminate any social functions and traditions that do not serve their quest for absolute power, especially over the minds of those they wish to rule. They create social functions and rules that do not 'work' to the benefit of the people but do keep the people under State control.
[Jamie - if you add Leftists to your analogies, they follow the 'Lord of the Flies' social model]

Yes, well this just demonstrates that most people end up being a contradiction in terms. Can you call that a paradox? Only if the opposite is true obviously. As to whether liberal conservatism can be embraced by those conservatives who are more liberal than actually conservative, I think, is something that should be debated liberally in a conservatory manner.

The definitions are so vague and confused they really do not mean what they should.
Liberals want freedoms
such as drugs
gay marriages
abortions
and religious tolerance
take higher taxes from the rich and help the poor
do not support wars that are profits for the rich...
the corporations/ super wealthy are to be policed (large government)
liberals are the minority with the likes of most of hollywood (actors) etc.
Conservatives
believe in christian fundamentals
of kill thine enemy
support the wealthy becoming richer
let the poor starve
and little freedoms......except to work a lot
they are conformists and believe in alienating anyone outside it
the media is corporate owned and often plays an important role in coercing the conservatives into a frenzy......
If i had to summarize I would say conservatives are hard working, greedy, judgmental, and afraid of change.....because they are in power....
Liberals want to help the poor and treat the world with respect rather than domination,,,, They see equality as a right, and that sometimes people are greedy and selfish, so the govt must police wealthy and corporations from taking advantage of the people.
Of course i am biased as others here on the spectrum....
politcalcompass.org will let you know where you are(a small test)
Jamie R has the best answer if you look deep enough it always ends up as she said.......

Liberal : broad-minded: tolerant of different views and standards of behavior in others
2. politics progressive politically or socially: favoring gradual reform, especially political reforms that extend democracy, distribute wealth more evenly, and protect the personal freedom of the individual
3. generous: generous with money, time, or some other asset
My great-aunt was liberal in her bequests.
4. generous in quantity: large in size or amount
a liberal helping
Conservative: 1. reluctant to accept change: in favor of preserving the status quo and traditional values and customs, and against abrupt change
2. traditionalist person: somebody who is reluctant to consider new ideas or accept change
3. right-wing political viewpoint: a right-of-center political philosophy based on a tendency to support gradual rather than abrupt change and to preserve the status quo
4. desire to preserve current societal structure: an ideology that views the existing form of society as worthy of preservation
Liberals think anything goes, everyone has equal rights and people shouldn't be judged or sterotyped. They believe in times
are changing and so should our values
Conservatives think things should be researched, thought through and dealt with on an individual basis. They believe in
a traditional world or values

conservatives- accept the status quo of society, like the way things are going
liberals- see a need for fundamental or small changes in society to better it for the future
Conservative and liberal are not always synonyms for Republicans and Democrats. Republicans can act liberally, and Democrat's conservatively.

I just answered a question almost identical to this.
The biggest difference is in the way they frame the issues in their minds. Both parties compare America and Americans to family and morals, but each have their own model.
The Conservatives have the Strict Father Model, and the Liberals have the Nurturant Parent Model, and this is the way they relate to the government and how the government should be run. It is very fascinating.

I view the political world with a two-dimensional framework which makes clear Liberal and Conservative.
ON SOCIAL ISSUES:
Liberals do NOT believe in centralized government on social issues such as drugs and crime, while conservative DO want more centralized government there (more prisons, promote the Drug War, more federal sentencing guidelines, etc.). The real distinction is in WHICH issues are considered appropriate for centralized government.
ON ECONOMIC ISSUES:
Liberals DO, in general, "tax and spend" more than conservatives, but conservatives do their share. As with social issues, the real distinction between liberals and conservatives is in WHICH programs they choose to spend money on.
TWO-DIMENSIONAL FRAMEWORK
Consider your views on economic issues and social issues, and whether you support individual rights or government intervention in each of the two realms. Government intervention in the economic realm means that you distrust "big business" and think that government should regulate "unfettered capitalism." Government intervention in the social realm means that you think society's morals have deteriorated, and there should be more enforcement of morality as opposed to "unfettered individualism."
CONSERVATIVE means you believe in government intervention in the social or moral realm, but not in the economic realm.
LIBERAL means you believe in government intervention in the economic realm, but not in the social or moral realm.
LIBERTARIAN means you don't believe in government intervention in either the social realm nor the economic realm.
POPULIST means you believe in government intervention in both realms. Other names for this group are PROGESSIVE, AUTHORITARIAN, or STATIST.
Of course, no definitional framework is perfect, and numerous issues don't fit this two-dimensional scheme. For example, gun control in this framework should be approved by conservatives (since it's a social / moral issue) and liberals should advocate gun rights. But it works on most issues.
YOUR POLITICAL AFFILIATION
There's a 20-question quiz which figures out your political affiliation using this scheme, at http://www.govote.com/. You answer your views on 20 issues, and it gives you a label like "libertarian-leaning liberal" or "moderate populist." The quiz also selects the presidential candidate who best fits your views, separating out the scores in the two dimensions defined above. (It doesn't include third-party candidates yet, but they'll be included within a couple of weeks). It's a fun quiz, unless you get labeled a "hard-core authoritarian"....

Its a big lie. Its the false left right paradigm, political football that means nothing. Its the governments way of making you think you live in a democracy when really they do whatever they want. Washington needs a purge. There is so much scum running things and they are all in it together. Listen to Alex Jones he will teach you.

One of the differences that is most apparent to me is that Liberals tend to be more open-minded to ideas like homosexuality. Conservatives tend to be stuck in the old ways and don't really support homosexuality. They tend to believe and want to continue to believe in the traditional values that have already been established.

The two terms have changed so much in the last decade that they no longer mean what the meant even just 20 years ago. But generally a liberal is some who will love you to death and a conservative is a cold, calculated, ultra religious, tough guy who rather kick your teeth in to get what he wants then to negotiate.
