It can take about 30 min for the Rods in your eyes, the part that sees at night, to fully readjust from being in bright light. For that lenght of time your vision will reamain somewhat impaired, you can remedy this by wearing an eyepatch over one eye and using this as your "dark eye" but I'm not sure the loss of depth perception is worth it.

The amount of light entering in the eye is controlled by the diameter of pupil. In dark (less light), the pupil's diameter increases to allow more light to enter as there is less light available. In brighter scenario, the pupil's size is reduced to reduce the amount of light entering inside eye. High intensity light is harmful for the cells in retina. When you come in bright sunlight from dark, the pupil's diameter is more and it takes some time to reduce its size. It is then you feel uncomfortable and eyelids tends to close as a body reflex, thereby reducing the amount of light entering in. Once the pupil's size is optimized, the vision becomes better and irritation ends. This discomfort is necessary to prevent any damage to the eye's retina.
