We use to have the greatest network of public phones, but two things did them; 1. Drug dealers (they would use them to make deals, so businesses would not allow them on their property), and 2) Cell phones (and home phones as well).

Who in the U.S. doesn't have a cell phone these days?

unfortunately, people in the US don't take pride in keeping our neighborhoods as nice as people in other countries do. therefore, we trash and vandalize public property (out of boredom or frustration?) and a popular target is the public pay phones. there might not be anything dirtier than a public pay phone in the US.

It's because of the proliferation of cell phones. There's not much need for public phones in the US anymore.

Probably because most of us have cellphones. Payphones are not big moneymakers, and are often vandalized or destroyed by the trashy people that use them (people too poor to even have a land line in their home) so manufacturers do not put alot of thought into them. Eventually payphones will be obsolete.
