This is your journal, so you should write the things that draw your attention. Become aware of people, the way the sky looks, moods, traffic, the area around you.
What do you see when your waiting for a bus, or on your way to school/work? write it down.
Before I retired, I use to watch for a bag lady that prowled the streets where the bus came into town. I would see her everyday and I noted what she was doing that day. She is an attractive middle aged woman, who bends over her cart of bags, and piles of blankets while she puts on her makeup. She uses a local restaurant's bathroom to "bath"--I see her coming out with a bundle wrapped in a towel, and her hair wet...
What makes this woman interesting? I wonder why she is homeless. Why doesn't she get a job, she is not injured, and seems quite rational (she refuses donations of food but said that she would accept money, but didn't ask for money)... she keeps herself clean, and appears healthy, she sleeps in bus shelters (outdoor shelters) in the summer, but I don't see her in the winter, perhaps she uses the homeless shelter's facilities.
Have you noticed how dark the clouds get when its going to snow? or how the sky changes color when the sun is going down? or how depressed you feel when you see a dead animal along side the road? or what how the trees bend in a wind storm?
So very much to write about-- after you note something you see, make a notation about how this made you feel. Did you smile when you saw the mother breast feed her baby in the doctors waiting room? Did you cry when you heard someones sad tale? what was the tale, write it down.
Remember that it is YOUR journal, and you don't have to write in it every day, but try. You will soon find that you can find something to remember everyday.

I always figure anything new is interesting. I stay away from "love" and "death" cause they've been done so many times. This is not to say that the "little" things are more interesting either. A lot of people rebel against the bigger issues by devoting 55 pages to the journey of a snail or something. Write about people... about quirks (quirky humor is oh so popular now)... write about what you find interesting. You could write to document or just for enjoyment. If you're doing it just for the fun of it, I'd look for things that you wouldn't have seen if you hadn't been looking.

If it is your life journal then write when the mood hits you.
1) Write about relationships with people, describe people both the good and not so good traits.
or
2)Try to find some thing that you are trying to improve on and record what went right and wrong and see if the record can help you.

a lot of it depends on what type writing you want to do, fiction or non-fiction. if you want to write fiction, what genre.
pick an event that has happened in your life and describe it from someone else's POV
do you have any pets?? you could write about the world through the eyes of one of an animal.
if you're into sci-fi at all you could write a story explaining Earth and different human cultures to an alien race
find an event that occured in the past (either a major historical event or something significant to you personally) and write what would have happened if the opposite occured.
and thanks for the question you helped spark some ideas for me for possible short stories/novels to work on

My favorite author saw breath in ordinary life that he applied to what he knew. Chaim Potok wrote a lot of his best works based on things he experienced growing up, but with a different plotline. There's a saying that the best writing is to write what you know about because then you can make it the most real.
