Your question makes it sound as if your teacher or a text book has defined the answer in 'absolute' terms. I don't know how one can determine 'power rankings' without a better description of the word 'power.'

You are getting good answers. I believe most people can agree on today's 'big 5'.....USA, China,UK,Russia & Japan.

The next five probably include France, Germany and India...but beyond that it is up to the definition.

I would include ( in no particular order)...Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia, S. Korea,Indonesia, Brazil and Israel. A case can be made for Italy, Mexico, Egypt, Spain and South Africa......all for different socio-economic or geo-political reasons.

China is a growing economic power...but has years to go in the areas of human rights and liberty.

The UK was the world's #1 super power for most of the 17th and 18th Century. The UK is still an economic & social super power....but must share the stage with the strengthening EU... (European Union).

It has been said that the USA won the 'cold war' and inherited the uneasy place as 'the only super power.' The US has made some grevious mistakes in the last 10 years......and we can all hope that it will mature into a 'leader by example' rather than being powerful just because it is the only 'big dog' left. The rest of the world knows that the USA is still the most generous nation on earth and the best hope for democracy......the people of the USA must guard against a federal government steeped in secrecy, lies and mismanagement.

I hope this answer helps .

Study as if you will inherit the world one day...you surely will.

You need to define power.

Population size: China, India, US, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Rusia, Nigeria, Japan, Mexico, Phillipines, Vietnam, Germany, Egypt

Economic power (GDP): US, China, Japan, India, Germany, U.K., France, Italy, Russia, Brazil, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, Spain, Indonesia

Military strength is tough to assess (incompatible data not readily available). The US, China and Russia, followed by a number of European countries would likely fit the bill.

my opinion:
1. US (largest economy and military)
2. China (greatest pop, #2 economy, large sphere of influence, and nukes)
3. UK (elements of both US and EU)
4. Russia (still controls many former Soviet republics)
5. Japan (huge economy, #1 GNP/capita)
6. France (controls EU)
7. Saudi Arabia (oil)
8. Germany (controls EU)
9. India (#2 pop, growing economy, strong tech sector)
10. Brazil (largest economy in South America)

It really depends on how you define powerful. Regardless, the U.S. should be #1 in any category with China almost directly behind it.
