In the Hagakure, the way of the warrior there is a medieval Japanese outlook on the attributes of a Samurai. To be a Samurai is to take on the responsibility of living a life committed to the expression of honour and duty. As with life, there are many levels and expressions of honour and duty, but simply put, one puts aside ones self and lives the life exemplified by these two important attributes. The clothing, the weapons are but external trappings, the heart and mind are the true weapons of the Samurai, and with these there is little that cannot be done, or importantly, attempted.

In feudal Japan, a samurai was a soldier of noble birth who followed the code of bushido and served a daimyo. The bushido is the ethical code of the samurai that was prevalent in feudal Japan that advocated unquestioning loyalty to the master at all costs and obedience in all deeds, valuing honor above life. A daimyo is a lord (high ranking socio political figure) during the Japanese feudal period.

First off, you have to have a haircut called a chon-mage which looks like a bald man using a pony tail as a comb-over. Most importantly to being a samurai, you must have a sword and be totally obediant and loyal to your master, which means you will do anything protect his honor. If it is necessary, you will cut your stomach open to retain the honor. If your master asks you to smoke his pole or toss his salad (which he frequently would) you must do it.

It has nothing to do with what they wear or what their swords are like. A samurai is one devoted to the practice of Bushido.

To be a samurai one needs to be Japanese. So if you're trying to be a samurai and you are not Japanese, just forget it. You've got no chance in hell! Also being a gay helps. Fact is, like most warriors, a majority of samurai were gay. This doesn't mean they were sissy girls prancing around doing interior decor.
