It's certainly not completely BS, but I'm sure more than a few women would be willing to admit that they milk it for a bit more than it's worth.

For example, look at how women behave with their friends while PMSing. Yeah, they might make a few bitchy snaps now and then, but later it's all "I'm so sorry! *huggles*"

We males don't receive that treatment. We're expected to deal with it with the simple excuse of "oh I was on my period." Umm, hello? That doesn't exactly excuse rude or bitchy behavior, does it? But they know we're afraid to call them out on it because we can't "empathize" (because men NEVER feel bad because of hormones *eye roll*).

So yeah, once again, PMS does exist. Just don't let them use it as an excuse to treat you badly.

I always just accepted it - knew it wouldn't last very long, and that they would be apt to say stuff they didn't mean.

I never minded forgiving it as long as they would do the same when I had one of my inexplicable rotten humors, which I did about as often as they did. But my last wife didn't. Took them too seriously and internalized too much of her perception of them, even though she admitted she would fly off the handle at times. She seemed to feel her well-known hormonal causal factors were a better explantion than I could come up with for like behavior on my part.

PMS is not b.s., it's definitely real. However, I agree with a lot of the other posters who said it should not be used as an excuse to mistreat anyone. There's a lot of recent evidence that suggests men have fluctuating hormones, as well, and that this can contribute to irritability and irrational anger, but neither sex should put up with mistreatment because of this.

Why does PMS exist? What's the practical purpose of experienceing monthly physical pain & mood swings? Why has this condition persisted since the beginning of human existence?

Most women just put up with it. "It's a way to vent." "It's just one of those things that happen. We don't know why."

Absurd. Something so painful, disruptive and potentially damaging to a relationship deserves scientific study.

Why buy into the notion that a condition that effects women physicaly, mentally, spiritually and emotionally every 28 days & is unpleasant for everyone involved is just one of those things?

That's good enough? Is an explanation that actually makes sense with a scientific and medical explination too much to ask?

On a related note; Researchers found out by accident what happens to womens' bodies when they experience hot flashes.

Women have been experiencing hot flashes for how long? Doctors have been writing prescriptions to treat hot flashes and didn't even have a clue as to what was actually happening during a hot flash. It's irresponsible. It's alarming and insulting to be disregarded.

There's only one explination that I've found that makes sense out of PMS.

Periods are supposed to be the exeption, not the rule.

The PMS behavior has been around since our beginnings. This is a primitive instinct. Women were supposed to be in the perpetual state of pregnancy to keep the human race alive.

If they aren't/weren't pregnant, they pushed their unfertile partners away. PMS takes a rational, happy woman and turns her into a drama queen. Why? This is an instinct that has kept the human population going.

It's good that you dump them. You aren't spreading your seed. It's nature's way of weeding out certain types of people like you.

I'm a woman and I also think it's BS most of the time. Just an excuse for rude behavior. But, because I'm a woman, I understand that there are in fact some women who really do suffer from it.

Well, I'm not going to resort to name-calling but when it comes to fluctuating hormones, at least women are on predictable cycles. Men are calm one minute, yelling at their kids the next, and then crying because their team lost.

Serin: You make an interesting point. I wonder how much sympathy a guy would get if he said, "sorry I got angry, but since I'm a guy, my testosterone levels were like, all over the place!"

Boy you plan on spending a lot of time alone don't you. I don't know too many women who don't suffer at least once in a while from PMS. It is painful and unwanted, then it is followed up by a week of bleeding sometimes uncontrollably, and why, just so we can give birth to your babies.
Go ahead dump us, it's a good way for us to find out you aren't
a suitable man for us anyway.
We need strong men who can and will support us when we really don't feel good.
I wish there was a way for a man to experience PMS and childbirth, just once.. I can assure you they would not say another word about it.

Never trust anything that bleeds for a week, but still won't die.

But seriously, Serin's right. Never let them use it as an excuse for treating you poorly.

If PMS can make a woman so out of control that she can use it as an excuse to get out of being responsible for committing a crime, then it can make her so out of control that she can't be responsible for, oh, say, voting.

They want it both ways, but they can't have it both ways. It either makes them mental defectives, or it doesn't. If it does, then they have no business having equal rights with men. If it doesn't, then they can't use it as an excuse for mistreating men or children.

Time to fish or cut bait, ladies.
