Although Young, Upton and Crawford are great prospects and are young and not yet making a lot of money, the Devil Rays have an immediate need to be more competitive. Since joining the league, they have only escaped last place once. Their fans are getting tired of the teams empty promises of future success and are staying away from the stadium in droves. The need to acquire name players and start winning and the only way they can do that is to use their young promising players as trade bait to get a better team on the field.

It has some to do with a need for pitching depth and it also is part character issues with Upton and Young. Both have serious questions about their desire (not ability...both are clearly very talented) but there are scouts from other teams who have publicly questioned the attitudes of both and Upton has defensive issues as well (the Sporting News also questioned Upton in particular, Young to a lesser degree). With the scandals and other issues in baseball the Devil Rays seem unwilling to deal with character issues and apparently other teams are feeling the same way. Nobody wants to give big money to bad apples anymore and both have the ability to put up huge offensive numbers (therefore making big dollar contracts). Crawford isnt likely to go anywhere, again they have offered him for pitching and prospects but all reports indicate that they are asking way too much in return hoping to get 4 or 5 major league ready players in return.Baldelli has been mentioned as well and again they want a kings ransom for him too so he will stay put. The only thing that will change their desire to deal Crawford or Baldelli will be their free agent summers, if they cant sign them early then they likely will deal them for less so they dont have to pay them big money...Rays ownership is cheap!!!

Devil Rays have had the worst record if not one of the worst records. You can't really blame them for trading good talent. They don't get a lot of money from MLB because of the reason I described above. I would think that the GM of rays is trying to build this team from young talent, they'll trade some players but also keep some players that'll help 'em out in future.

It's all about pitching.... They don't have any, and need some. You can pick up decent hitters much easier than a good pitcher so you have to give up your best prospects. Even so young and Upton are seen as wild cannon and scouts are not so sure about their love for the game.... It don't think many teams would want them, giving up a pitcher. Crawford is quality though.

They want starting pitching. All they have pretty much is Kazmir. Problem is, the D-Rays want an entire farm system for one of these guys, so the offers are not really coming.

Because they have no fans in the present. Right now they are an embarrassment to baseball and they need to get better NOW.
