Is it difficult to switch gears? I've driven a car with a manual transmission before. Any tips?

Here's what ya do. Find a school, either avocational school or private school that is Motorcycle Safety Foundation rating and take the class. They will wlk you through everything a beginner needs to know. Oh,by the way ,you shift on the left by stomping down on the shift leverto first The clutch is located on the L/s handle bar as a lever. Raise your toe up to shift into the next gear. Ist gear is always at the bottom.2nd is one up and 3rd is next up and so forth. Front brake lever is on the right side and thats front brakes. There is a pedal at your right foot that is the rear brake. Throttle / give it gas is located on the handle grip R /S

It's not very hard to shift, just a bit different than a car. I would take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) basic rider course first. That way, you will learn all the basics on how to ride and operate a bike. After you take the course, then get a bike. But don't make the mistake that most people do and go buy a 600cc sport bike. Start with something smaller, 500cc or less. My first bike was a Ninja 250cc and it was a great bike to learn on.

imo starting off on the street is a bad idea ... u should try to go riding with someone with dirtbikes or let that be ur first purchase ... a smaller fourstroker would be best ... anyway switching gears on a bike is easy just pull the clutch and its one down and 4 or 5 up and they usually carry themselves through the gears pretty much ... just a little gas and its only a second or two bewteen shifts ... same with breaking ... hit the brakes and its just a second or two between downshifts.

Take a class. They provide the bikes (usually a small one) and you can practise in a large lot with no other traffic. To aclimate yourself to the feel of how a motorcycle handles, ride a bicycle at slow speed, and weave between some points on the road. You'll get the idea of how a bike reacts to leaning and centrifugal forces.

Check with your local community college. They may have a motorcycle safety class there. I took my motorcycle safety class there and they provided all the material and the bike to ride on the course for $75.00 for 4 saturdays. If your local college doesn't offer it, check with your local Dept. of Motor vehicles or even your State Police Barracks for information. Incidentally, after completing the safety class, I got a high enough score that i didn't have to take the road test on my bike, just the test and had the extra classification added to my driver's license. Good Luck!

From an experienced rider who never had an incident.....I started out with a moped on the street and a dirt bike on the ground. Dirt bike is very forgiving if you mess up because you won't die and you get good practice shifting. A moped gives you street knowledge and control. Eventually you build to a full street bike. I can't recommend doing it any other way unless you have a death wish. GOOD LUCK!

It's easy enough. Just ride up and down the drive. If you can nail 1st, neutral and 2nd, then you should be able to handle a bike on the road. Just dont let your fear get the best of you and you'll be good to go.

I learned to ride in a weekend rider's safety class. Check with riders you know to see if they know when one is. Most states have you take one anyway and most insurance companies like you to have one. Mine started with just walking the bike and by the end I was ready to ride (carefully ...)

My boyfriend took me to an old vacant lot for months to learn before letting me go out onto the main road. He made me learn swerving, shfting, braking, skidding everything. Then I took the Motorcylce Foundation Saftey Class. They have beginner thru experienced. I highly recommend it. Check them out .
