Sounds like an oil burner?

If so you have to start by replacing the fuel line filter and burner nozzle of the same style and rating.

You may also have to clean some soot from the electric eye that shuts down the burner if there is no flame after a couple seconds.

Electrode gaps and spark transformer would be checked next. (As the latter is a high voltage item, I won't elaborate.)

Best advise is to get a pro if you are not familiar with the systems. I am trained to work on boiler systems and they can be very dangerous. Although home unit are somewhat safer and easier, the danger still exhists.

get a potato and some speaker wire, and a piece of spam, slap the spam on it and wire that to the potato, it should work if you spin around 10 times and yell " abba zabba out loud, if that doesnt work, hit it with a baseball bat.
