we are not successful in removing the lower pully as we are attempting to replace a broken timing belt. A cheater bar has been used and all that happens is that the 3/8s breaker bar twists.
We are trying to turn the nut counterclockwise. Suggestions?

By all means this is a DIY type of job. Not knowing your skill level I can't say if you can do it. Only you can answer that question. Get the Chiltons manual for your car and read the procedure. If you feel you are up to the challenge, go for it. If you have any doubts about your ability to perform the job correctly, then take it in and have it done.

The four cylinder SOHC are pretty easy. The four cylinder DOHC and V-6 are a bit more complicated.

Honda engines are an interference type engine. That is to say if the timing marks are not lined up properly when installing the new belt, serious engine damage could result.

The last one I did on a Honda Civic I didn't have to take off the lower pulley,I would suggest buying a Chilton's manual it will show you exactly how to do the job,and they are not very expensive.Ive always had a manual for those more difficult jobs.
