I'm not talking about your boss or people who can make your life good or bad, I mean just other random people, why do we care what they think

Because Sam, we are all connected. What we do, say, etc. effects other people and when people say we can do our own thing & it doesn't hurt anyone else, nonsense! We are relational, the way God created us. It's like a domino effect, everyone effects everyone else! No man is an island. Hence, we naturally 'care' what others are doing, what they think, will say, etc., it's just the way we're wired. Just like anything else, we shouldn't take it to extreme, moderation in all things. ok?

It all has to do with a person's self image and self esteem. If a person is constantly thinking about what other people have to say, then they are looking for some kind of acceptance within themselves. We all can be insecure sometimes.

Because we are insecure and have so many uncertainties. We look to others and hope that they can provide a new perspective. If they give one that is painful, we are revolted but still wonder if it is true.
