As the other two said, it's basically identifying who wrote the article. Usually it's a box with the words "by firstname lastname"

At my current job, we also include office email addresses in bylines, although I know some publications put them at the end and some don't put them at all.

My college paper used to put the person's title as well as the name in each byline.

A byline is just what it says it is BY whomever wrote the article.
by Joe Shmoe. by John Doe etc.....
