Assuming you're talking about just a local network...

You will need to replace, at the very least, your network cards, routers and switches with hardware that can handle 1000Mb/s.

You will probably need to replace all your cabling, too - use Cat6 cable, which can handle the higher data rate....and consider professional cabling service. This kind of data rate is really pushing the limits of what can be done with copper, you can afford far fewer error-causing bad joints, kinks, etc.

Be ready to break your network down into physically smaller segments, with gigabit bridges between them.... speed degrades over long spans.

Have fun!

Your cabling must all be CAT5e or better. All NICs and switches will need to be swapped out for gigabit.

If your cabling infrastructure is CAT5e or better but has been around for a while, I'd strongly suggest you get it certified by a professional cable installer. Gigabit cabling is much less forgiving of errors than 100 megabit is. If you have any slop in the wiring (excessive untwist, sloppy punchdownds, tight bends, etc.) it will need to be corrected.

How big is your network? A 1000Mbps switch is expensive. Also, why does your boss want to do that? It does not improve Internet speed.

Cat 5e, 6 or better for cable
For switch and NIC card, any card/switch that is 10/100/1000 will do just fine.

FOr internet access, you are still limited to your provider's speed.
