Ah, depends on the rea, really.
By and large, I dislike today's music, but having said that you might want to check out 'Die Fantastischen Vier' (Hip Hop), or 'Wir sind keine Helden' (Progressive Rock).
You can also check out a little blast from the past in performers representing classic rock like Marius Mueller-Westernhagen (especially live!), Herbert Groenemeyer, or BAP (great band from Cologne).
Old pop music artists from the 'German Wave' era worth listening to are Trio, Nena (forget 99 Luftballons; that song is weak compared to her other stuff), or Ideal. If I were to pick one artist who best epitomizes what Germany is about, I would go for Mueller-Westernhagen.

Paul Van Dyk is good if you like trance music, for rock Die Ãrzte are pretty good.
