Last week i was on the 710 here in LA and the freeway was completely shut down in the middle of rush hour. i couldnt split the lanes on the fast lane because all the crs were to close and the lanes werent that wide. Plus there were a bunch of big riggs because it was of Long Beach and the port. Is it illegal to use the shoulder if you stay close to the cars?

If it comes down to safety save your butt first, and worry about the ticket second. If it's not so life-threatening, there's a video out there of somebody in Oakland riding backwards through stopped traffic after they'd been advised by the police to get off the freeway as best they could.

Personally I hate riding on the shoulders -- too many flats as it is while riding on the regular streets. If you're the type that doesn't ride on a patched tire you may have to deal with a $150 or so bill by riding on the shoulder if not a ticket.

IN my motorcycle?

Lane splitting is not against the law there because there is NO law there (for or against). It is expressly against the law here as there IS a law against it. Be that as it may, traveling in the breakdown lane or on the shoulder is against the law in most places I have been. Passing on the right is also against the law in many places. Crossing a solid line to pass is illegal. Isn't there a solid line between the right lane and the shoulder?

I ride every day, and I have to share the road with cars, but who in their right mind would want to be CLOSE to them? And where they won't expect you to boot?

Getting stuck in traffic sucks.

The shoulder is always illegal, and a damn good way to get wrecked real quick. I never do it. I'll split lanes if I have to , but riding the shoulder is way too easy to get dead quick. You're stuck between a cager and a wall. No way out if something happens.

Oh yeah.......and it's illegal to split the cars. Ready to die young man? or ready for a big fine? Pretend you are in a car and do whatever a car can do legally. You have no special priveledges on a bike here in the US.......now overseas? That's a DIFFERENT story as you CAN split the cars going up to traffic lights. I found that out stopping at a light in Taiwan and got passed up by 50 buzzing mopeds.

Illegal and a Bad Idea. Ever notice all the tire treads, hubcaps, broken glass etc on the shoulders? How would you like to ride over all that?
