In choral music the range of an alto is usually from G below middle C to F above high C on the staff.
The soprano's range is from middle C to high C above the staff.

In the opera an alto would go as high as a G on top of the staff, a mezzo-soprano (in between alto and soprano) would go to a B above the staff, and a soprano would go as high as an E above the staff.

Singing alto is singing within a lower range than soprano. Generally sopranos cover the higher upper register whereas altos cover the lower upper register. Tenors and basses cover the lower register. So when you sing Soprano you will most likely be singing the melody and you will most likely be singing the highest. Altos and tenors generally fill in the gaps to make sure that all three pitches in a chord are represented. Basses sing the lowest note most of the time and will least likely havce the melody.

Soprano is the highest women's voice range, followed by Mezzosoprano and Alto is the third lowest. You determine it , I imagine, by how high a voice range you have. Talk to a music teacher and see if he/she can determine it for you. Chances are, though, if you sit/stand in the Alto section of the school or church choir, you are an Alto.

Sopranoes (females)have a higher vocal range...they sing the "high notes". Altoes (also females) sing the next lower set of notes.
