I have been quoted $8200 to supply and install two complete 13 seer AC systems - one for downstairs, one for upstairs. As an option the company has also quoted for 14 seer units - the price is significantly higher at $11,900.

Is there any real benefit in the 14 seer over 13 seer and if so, how long would it take to recoup the extra cost through lower utility bills?

The units are a 3.5 ton and a 3 ton, they both use Puron refrigerant.

Seer rating is the efficiency, so obviously a 14 has an advantage, but only if it's savings are proportional or better than the cost differential.

Like many things, there will be a range where there is a lot of demand, thereby a lot of competition, and thereby better pricing. Get out of this commodity group, and prices get disproportionate. I would say that this is the differential you see in these bids.

This is a $3700 difference; the interest alone on that investment(at 10%) would require $370 a year in savings to offset. If you ran air conditioning for 9 months a year, that's $41 a month.

I don't think your savings would ever pay for the 14 seer system.

Get additional prices. No way a 14 seer should be $1800 per system more than a 13 seer in residential sizes.

You should get 3 prices minimum, especially with the cost discrepancies your first quote has...

seer, seasonal energy efficiency rating. you didn't`t say if the units you received quotes on were r22 or r410a refrigerants, the size of the units or even the manufacturer. even still the quotes seem on the high side.you can probably get the most for your money if you go with Goodman units.
