I can't get a chain-link gate open because of ice under it that won't melt. It doesn't get warm enough outside to melt on its own. Is there an easy way to melt it? I've tried chipping at it with no success.

Rock salt. It will melt the ice unless it's about -10 degrees.

if there is an accessible plug outside you could hold your hair dryer to it for a little while, or pour salt on it, salt makes the cold from the ice escape more quickly, causing the ice to melt faster but feel colder.

Course salt should do the trick if there is nothing close by that the salt will corrode. If you cannot use salt go to a hardware store and get some ice melter.
