Without going into details, I just had something happen that is devastating to me. I have something really important coming up that I HAVE to be prepared for...how can I possibly get myself in control so I can manage to do it? It can't be rescheduled or anything like that and I have no family or friends to help me.

First, physically get yourself into a quiet place where you can be alone for a few minutes. Then close your eyes and breathe deeply several times to calm your spirit. This is vital.

Now, allow your mind to visualize the terrible thing that happened. Picture the event itself and all the chaos and repercussions and feelings that surround it, as all being contained in one room in your mind. When you have successfully pictured all this, visualize yourself stepping out of the room into the corridor outside the room and closing the door behind you. The situation is still there; it's just going on without you for this moment.

You are now free to enter another room, namely the one that contains the situation for which you must prepare. You may exit this room and reenter the first room as needed, but you must have some mental and spiritual space to succeed. Thoughts and images from the first room will intrude into your preparation room: when they do, command them to go back. Eventually you'll need to show up in the first room and deal with it. See if you can do it in chunks, and slip away into the second room every chance you get.

Keeping the two separated is key.

Good luck!

Does this happen to you often? I once had walking pneumonia and gurgled horribly each time I took a deep breath. I had to qualify at the rifle range and unfortunately only qualified with a sharpshooter medal due to the inability to breath correctly while aiming and firing the rifle. Some things in life are just that way. I couldn't cancel the test. I would have been set back two months and that was worse. Live with the results or get over them. Try to rest if you can, shake it off and ignore it.

You didn't explain how much time you have. Me, I would cry my eyes out for a while and then give myself enough time to compose myself and fix my makeup before going to my thing. If you have more time, try doing something physical like running or some kind of exercise. If there is anyone you can talk to do it. Talking takes a weight off your shoulders, it really makes a big difference. I don't know why, but it does. If not, write it in a journal.
