I have been told it is easier on a computer to leave it on all the time than it is to turn them off. I have left my PC on 24/7, till recently when I was told he would wear out faster, and I should turn it off when not in use. Also I have a laptop, not very knowledable regarding laptop, other than using it. PLease tell me should I leave a laptop on when not in use, or should I turn it off when I've finished using it. I have left it on for days, plugged into outlet, but haven't since I have heard of them catching on fire. Thanks to any computer wizard who knows there stuff and can give me solid advice in the area of my question. Thanks in advance.

I have been in the electronics repair biz for 30+ years and can tell you that any home entertainment device including desktop PCs are more apt to fail when constantly turned on and off. This is due to the expansion and contraction of circuit boards from heating and cooling. Primarily, it causes the solder joints in the board to crack and lose connection. It is also hard on some of the components. Although this happens in a laptop also, it is dangerous to leave a laptop run due to overheating and causing a fire. Its the lesser of 2 evils here. ANYONE who tells you different knows absolutely nothing about the subject!

I agree shut off your laptop and give it a break like the other people said save some money on your electric bill. I don't know about anyone else but I haven't heard of a desktop computer wearing out just from leaving it on. And if thats the case then I might have a problem.

You will want to turn off the laptop when not in use. Laptops can have the tendency of image retention. Also, a lot of laptops use the battery even when plugged in. You use the battery the same time the battery is charging. This can wear out a battery and shorten the battery's life. Hope this helps.

For the PC, it doesn't really matter. Most people like to put their computers in standby to save energy but still be able to use it easily. (meaning without having to wait for it to turn on) Always turn off or hibernate your laptop. It will get really hot other wise (if left on a table overnight, it can peel off the lamination). Hibernation can make your computer run slower, but the start up is faster.

Depending on your power source and your computer, it is better to leave your computer on, especially on stand-by or sleep mode, if your will be using it periodically throughout the day; however, if you are not going to be using it for an extended time - while at work, it would be better to turn it off to save energy and computer wear and tear. Laptops, because of battery usage, should be shut down when not in extended use.

This is not a funny or joke answer: It depends. It depends upon your preference. Pcs these days are built tougher. They can take being turned on for long periods of time, and they can also take the temperature differences from being turned on and off. I agree with the poster who suggested turning it off overnight. Plus, this also flushes out the RAM, which means that you are starting with a clean and "fresh" pc the next day: that can only be good.

No - turn it off. You'll save your electricity bill and you'll also help to save the planet. If you leave a laptop on all the time with the battery in, the heat will shorten your battery's life. If you are using your laptop attached to the mains, then you may as well remove the battery.

Modern ppower supplies are much better than 10 yrs ago. You can turn it off a few times a day without worry - and if un-attended [because of the battery issues]for a while turn it off.

hibernate is better than power down - brings you back to where you were fast.

I have a Dell GX1 that has been on since 2001. It was built in 1998. I use it as a sever and except for brown out it is never turned off.I have 13 computers in all and most don't get turned off except to reboot.

Keep it on.

All except one were good suggestions.

Due to my working habit, i always turn on my laptop 24/7.
I've faced one problem which is the battery will be easily spoil. So now i will take out my battery and just power it up using power source.
And now everything working fine.
Once in the blue moon i will restart my laptop just to "refresh" it.
