Oh dear! You've found out the hard way just how insecure Microsoft Windows is! You really shouldn't connect Microsoft Windows to the internet without first taking as many precaustions as you can. For now, you can use SUPERAntiSPyware
http://www.SUPERAntiSpyware.com/
But remember that even though you've cleaned this one out, you're still vulnerable!
Make sure you always run up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. Always install all Microsoft security updates as soon as they come out. Ensure you have a firewall. Never use Internet Explorer (use Firefox instead) or MSN Messenger (Use GAIM or Traillian). Never download anything you don't understand. Never click on any banners.

AntiVermin is a particularly nasty piece of spyware from Russia, and it is hard to get rid of, but Ad-Aware SE Personal from Lavasoft will do that. You can get it free from download.com.

Microsoft Windows is not a "particularly unstable" operating system. I've used Windows since it's beginnings in the early '80s. I'm on the internet every day, sometimes for hours at a time, but I've never gotten AntiVermin, and have very little spyware on my computer. I use Ad-Aware every day before I shut down the computer at night, just like brushing my teeth. It makes a difference where you go and what you click on.

I know there are tons of anti-spyware and anti-adware solutions in the market. But i strongly recommend you download and run Ad-aware. Its removes adware. Its a fantastic program and yet free (basic version is free). Its available from lavasoftusa.com. or you can go to www.download.com to download it. Here is the link from download.com
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
Remember, the software name is Adaware not adware. :-)
When you run it, it will bring up all the spyware residue and then you can quarentine them and then remove it. Its easy to use.
