He is one of America's definitive writers. He has been ground breaking, outspoken, rebellious, and at times been a moral compass for the direction our nation should go.
Jay Parini of American Masters describes him as a "novelist, essayist, playwright, and provocateur whose career has spanned six decades, beginning in the years immediately following World War II and continuing into the early years of the twenty-first century."
He wrote "The City and the Pillar" the country's first explicitly gay novel. This was in 1948 and it nearly shattered his career -- The New York Times Book Review refused to acknowledge his next five novels.
After a long trip to Europe -- part of the time with Tennessee Williams -- Gore returned to the U.S. He began writing for Hollywood and ghost writing a series of mystery novels. All very successful.
He slowly entered the political fray in the role of essayists, which is what much of America knows him for. He excelled in this literary form and has served as one of the strongest voices in the defense of the Constitution, personal freedoms and liberty.
In 1993 he won the National Book Award for "United States: Essays, 1952-1992".
I'm fond of his great historical novels including Burr, Lincoln and Duluth.
Hope this helps. --Andy

No. in spite of the undeniable fact that the headline misconstrues what Vidal reported. Vidal did not mean we are able to have a military dictatorship "below Obama". He reported “We’ll have a military dictatorship quickly, on the muse no one else can carry each little thing mutually". "no one else" refers back to the military, no longer Obama. In previous paragraphs Vidal says Obama is a f*ck up who has genuinely no understand-how of military concerns and isn't any longer using the potential of the president like Lincoln did and can want to correctly be assassinated. Obama is a civilian. I finish Vidal change into concerning a authentic coup by potential of the military. it variety of feels not likely to me that this can take position "quickly", yet I i does no longer rule it out interior the destiny. something of the quote: "Obama might want to were more effective powerful off specializing in instructing the american human beings. His venture is being overeducated. He doesn’t understand how dim-witted and ignorant his target market is.” Vidal has always been the epitome of an effete psychological snob. He thinks all people no longer as sensible as he's (he's astounding) is a moron.

I think he first came on the scene as some sort of governmental role (press advisor?) but he is best known as an non-fiction author.
