I can't see why it would automatically be illegal since the states seem to operate fairly independently on that issue. Of course, you have to answer every question truthfully when you apply.

About 15 years ago, my British license was suspended for a year (I think it was just a year) in Minnesota due to a DUI. The judge was careful to explain to me that my British license was perfectly valid in the other 49 states, but not in MN. And, that the only way to drive in MN was to apply for, and receive an MN license --- even though I was not a resident.

So, that is what I did. But it suggests that the laws surrounding your right to drive from state to state are not as coherent as you might suppose.

So, before assuming that it is true, I would suggest that you actually check within the state in question since many of the replies you have received to this question are "knee-jerk" reactions to what people "think" the law should be. Not necessarily what it really is.

In most states require you to surrender your license from any other state in order to receive a license. They will check to find out if it has been suspended before issuing a license. The application will ask if you hold a license from another state. Lying on the form is perjury.

YES.

Truckers used to do this all the time.

You cannot get a license in any state except where you physically reside.
