TAKE A CAT(LIVE) AND FEED IT A MUSHROOM FLAVORED WITH MEAT SAUCE. OBSERVE CAT FOR A LITTLE WHILE. IF CAT EXPIRES, THAT MUSHROOM WAS POISONOUS. IF THE CAT DOES NOT EXPIRE, THAT MUSHROOM WAS NOT ONLY EDIBLE BUT NON-POISONOUS.

Oh yes, there's a difference! An edible mushroom is simply defined as one with an absence of poisons and the presence of a desirable taste and smell. A poisonous mushroom will cause a negative physical reaction, ranging from minor gastric distress to liver failure and possible death. For this reason one must really know what they're doing when trying to tell the difference. That said, to answer your question, yes it's possible to tell the difference. However, it's not always so cut and dry. You have to learn about the mushrooms in your area through research, practice, and hands-on instruction. The only way to safely learn is to find a local mushroom club or someone truly experienced and go out with them. Pictures in a book aren't always reliable. There's isn't a standard "rule" that lets you tell whether or not a mushroom is poisonous just by looking at it. You have to learn to recognize specific species and know whether or not they can hurt you. This takes practice, and even experienced hunters will follow this adage if they're not absolutely sure: "When in doubt, throw it out!". See the links for more information. Good luck!

If you were not taught as a child to recognize the most easily identified safe varieties, get yourself two of the best field guides with color plates. I say TWO guides, as you will be able to see different color pictures of the same mushroom.

There are several varities that are very easy to identify, and they do NOT have look-alikes that are toxic.

There are other "edible" mushrooms that DO have look-alikes that can make you very sick or kill you. DON'T mess with these!

Spend the money on two good field guides and study them carefully.

You will see that I speak the truth that there are some very good edibles that do not look like toxics.

Bring along a book and a mushroom expert. Some mushrooms are alarmingly similar.

Yes the differences are to slight to take a chance. Ppl throughout the years have supposedly knew what they were doing just to get a wrong one and end up dead.....it's not worth it. Go to the grocery store!

edible- easily purchased at your local grocer in a wide variety of types.
Poisonous- who knows? The physical differences can be so slight that professionals have made mistakes and died.

the safest way is to go to the store....you'll know they are safe there.

Mushroom picking is very dangerous. You MUST be trained or with someone HIGHLY trained. A little mistake can and most likely will kill you.

It is serious stuff.

Well, definately don't try a taste test.

Sorting them out is best left to a professional mushroomologist
