I use AVG free version and it's very thorough, it takes aaaaaages to complete and scans every nook and cranny of your pc!

You could also try deleting your cookies, and running the de-frag thingy, that can help speed things up a bit.

dwight beat me to it! the best scan i found was houscall at trendmicro.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
allow the scan to complete, during the scan do not close the browser window or change to a different page.
wait for the scan to finish. allow it to clean what it can and delete what is uncleanable. do not quaranitine anything or if you do delete the quarantine as soon as you can and then repeat the scan.
your system may benefit from a registry check as well. so go to http://registry-clean.net and download and install registry clean expert. this is a free trial that will fix a few problems each scan and fix. don't worry if money is tight. you can use the trial for an unlimited time frame. however as i said instead of the recomended hree scan and clean processes, you will need to run as many as it takes to get a clean system.

also see http://www.trendmicro.com and get the free trial of pc-cillin internet security 2007 quite possibly in my experiance the best security suite on the market today.

however think about this. while malware can cause your system to perform slowly, so can a hard drive that has become corrupted or is failing.
so run defrag on all of your drives as well as chkdsk on all your drives. speaking having in the last week had a drive cause me some grief when it became corrupted, to fix this run chkdsk however if chkdsk is unable to repair the disc then you will have to copy the data to back up medai such as another hard drive or DVD. Then you will need to delete the partion on the drive and then create a new partition and format the drive.
once done the drive should be back to normal.

i thought i had a bad malware infection (on a system protected by norton) but after running several different tests i tracked the problem down to a single drive in my system that had been corrupted. also in my case a power cable and the data cable had become lose causing the coruption.

so open your computer and check all cables are properly connected to the drives and system board.

good luck in tracking down your problem.

Change your operating system and you will not have botulism or virus.

Your requirements for virus scans will no longer required.

Just load a new operating system from Mandrive.com a Linux operating system that includes all the programs you'll need. You can keep your Windoze and copy all your files by dragging the files from the Windoze disk to the Linux system.

I would agree with AVG Free edition. I ued to have Norton, which was free with my computer but if you want updates after a year, then your expected to pay extra.

AVG is great and i have been virus free since i started using it, it even throws up alerts wehn downloading files!

Hello,
you are using Yahoo, there's pretty good, good pop-up sorter too, another one is to get sygate firewall, and then go get avast, they both work their *** off for me, hope this helps you out..... You might need to do a spot of system fragmenting too, here's how-: click start, and go to all programs, then go to accessories, then get systen tools on your monitor, and follow what it asks you what you want to do, it's all safe and you won't lose anything you don't wanna, sometimes a good old fashioned boot will suffice, shut down you system and on-plug it for a couple of minutes, then plug it in again and switcth it all on again, this has worked for me in the past, but defragmenting is a good way to speed up the system.. bye,... Try avg, do a search for grisoft. Free and very good. And it doesn't wreck your PC like Norton.

Of the pay ones, Macafee is the best, it's what most companies use.

Its more likely to be spyware and adware.
You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for home use;

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.
http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

There are a few you can use , personally I use both Spybot search and destroy (http://www.spybot.info/) , and avast (http://www.avast.com/0, both are free and easy to use, also you best give adaware a try from lava soft (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/), again this is free, I run all 3 along side each other and it keeps my PC fairly clean.
