You wont find a GT 500 but that doesn't mean you cant find a good deal on a cool car that will lend itself to modification. However you need to narrow your search to what you like, Chevy, ford, Pontiac...so on, you can find many good deals if your are patient. You can find mid 70s to late 80s Camaros for a good price and these cars (although smog regulated) can be modified allot. If you don't mind four doors you can find cars that are in nice shape and V8s for fair prices too...don't be narrow minded when it comes to a search, you wont find a ready to run GT500 or any other "muscle car" for 4 grand but you can find a used 66 mustang coupe with a small V8 or straight 6 for 4-5 grand if you look in the right places.....I recommend looking on eBay motors, under collector cars or Traderonline.com, there are tons of cars out there ripe for the picking...you just have to be creative.

hahahahaha, a cheap affordable Shelby GT500?!! They were never cheap. I saw a 1957 Chrysler 300C once for 2000 dollars (in 1986, So Cal car no rust) and a 48 Tucker (complete and running) for 6000 dollars (back in 1984) Keep dreaming though and keep an eye out for 1977-1992 Camaros and Firebirds and Mustangs. These cars had most of the original muscle car feel and concept (well, the V8 models). The biggest score you will find is the unadvertised car you will run into in your own neighborhood. Hey those yard sales and garage sales people have are great for seeing what cars people are storing in their garages!!

My brother had a 68 Camaro and he had it all tweaked. Oh boy was that fun to drive. The old charger and of course the Mustang...was it the 64 1/2? But all those cars are being collected now and the law of supply and demand apply. But it's funny...my brother bought that car for probably less than 2 G's and now you can't get one even close to 10

i need to be courting my self, yet right here is going. I owned the 1971 SS 454 Chevelle, and the seventy one 454 Vette. To force them replaced into and is..own the seventy one Vette back now. The vibration of a large block is something that must be experienced to relish. Having suggested and lived that...the hot automobiles do each and everything greater advantageous..different than sound. It replaced into pronounced which you ought to upload HP to older automobiles much less complicated. nicely definite, as they did no longer could combat the epa, however the hot automobiles Vette, Viper, Hemi Charger, have greater HP to the wheels off the showroom floor than any of those previous automobiles and punctiliously streetable with over 20 MPG. My SS on the line ought to no longer ruin 10 MPG and the Vette ought to get 13. Now, look on the "look at me" area of utilising the older muscle automobiles. No assessment pass classic. force every day...MAKE MINE THE VIPER!!

there are very few affordable old muscle cars anymore, your best bet is to try to find an old car that has a 6cyl. in it and start fixing up the body and then drop a V8 in it as you can afford it, you should be able to find an old dodge dart, nova, etc. around $5,000 or so that needs work.
