http://touregypt.net/historicalessays/hatshepsut.htm Check this , the explanation is near the beginning . She married her younger half brother who was the pharoah and he died shortly thereafter. Her marriage to her half brother was believed to give him a stronger right to the throne with more royal blood connected to the deceased pharoah. She became the regent for his son by another marriage . There is an interesting article on this in Smithsonian magazine for Sept., 2006 . There are differing opinions on her reign as a pharoah and the fact that she was intent on appearing like a man so she would be seen as a pharoah.

Her half brother Thuthmose II ascended to the throne after the death of Thuthmose I. Egyptian traditions were that whoever was Pharaoh had to marry a female of royal blood. The men were not considered to be carriers of royal blood. Hatshepsut had a heavy influence on her husband. He died not long after becoming Pharaoh. His only son was born to a lesser wife and because of his age, Hatshepsut declared herself Pharaoh and ruled Egypt.

Her husband Thutmose II died and she became regent for her nephew/step-son, Thutmose III around 1480 B.C. A woman with a will of her own, who had exerted a strong influence over late husband, and with the power of the regency behind her, she eventually had herself crowned pharaoh around 1473 BC. She ruled as Pharoah until her death at about age 50 around 1458 B.C.
