This is indeed a very very very old saying. It is also very very very inaccurate. Even given the liberation of the sexual revolution in the 60's and the sunsequent liberalisation of attitudes toward sex, still the most common sexual position is the good old 'missionary position'. In this position you are indeed looking at the 'mantlepiece', which is the whole point of the exercise. One is supposed to be looking at the face of the person one loves while making love, and this applies to both parties.

Put simply, if you are not attracted to the other person in the first place, why would you want to be involved in such an intimate act with them anyway?
