A friend is having one and says its hard to explain

It is when you both agree to be in a relationship but it has no boudaries .. you can sleep with other people but not get involved with them.. Example if you are both out one night togther and someone catches your eye and you feel sexually attracted to them then your partner allows you to go off with them..
I personally couldnt have an open relationship but some people can and need to as long as both parties agree then its up to them...
It does ask the question of why they are in a relationship or if there really is one to start with if they have feelings for each other why would they need to go else where for sex... So does this mean when they sleep togther they are making love and anyone else they spend the night with is just a shag to keep the relationship alive ... they are also using people and dont have much respect for themselves...

I'm with Fay's description. I can see it working with very few people. I much prefer the idea of fcuk buddies, than this sham. I fell that in most of these relationships, it's one person wants to sleep around and the other person has no self respect.

An open relationship means they are having sex outside there relationship. They could also be bringing others into it.

Basically an open relationship means "I wanna settle down at some point but not necessarily with you, I'm still on the look out for something better than you and when i find it I'm gonna shagg it and see it for a bit and possibly finish with you for it but if i don't ever find someone else then you're my fall back option...."

it means u can sleep with who u want when u want.. where u want and how u want.. so can they!not a bad idea if you dont mind your partner going off all the time and you yourself to harvest sti's etc
also look up mormon relationships,might give you a better idea...
