It already aired in Canada, that's how we know who died.
The N does not make Degrassi, it's CTV in Canada that has the rights to it, and the N has picked up the rights to air it in the US.
They probably wanted someone from the 1st season who you have watched for 6 years. Remember, they are trying to be real, and students get killed by violence. You're not going to care if it's Peter or some lesser character. They want you to think of JT as your friend, and what it'd be like if your friend was the one killed from this kind of violence. It happens all too often and Degrassi is portraying that and showing what a REAL problem it is.
Heck, the original air date of the episode that he dies was last Fri. Jan 19th, but that was postponed because a kid in Mass. was stabbed to death by a fellow student!

The show sucks. The only interesting character was Rick. J.T. was annoying and I grew up and realized how soapy this thing really was. It's just another reason the N is a pile of crap invented to hypnotize teens.

he didnt get kicked off the show, he just isnt showed as much, in the new season.
