I have a major phobia of needles, and I can tell you that absolutely NOTHING helps me. There have been several things people have tried over the years to make it better such as:
-bring a cd player with music that is soothing, or you like singing to, however this can also make that song scar you for the rest of your life
-bring a favourite stuffed animal and hold on to it for dear life
-try this lotion you can buy at the drug store which will numb the skin. This helps if it is the feeling she hates. If she is like me and just hates the thought of it, it doesn't do to much.
All I can say is let her know you are there and be prepared to have a very bruised hand. Some people grow out of this easily, some don't. Regardless, needles are a fact of life.
Also, it would be wonderful if you can talk to the blood taker before hand. Sometimes they can be quite understanding. Other times they don't care about the phobia and just stick it in you.
Either way, be prepared for tears and a big fight, but good luck!

Relay this information to the phlebotomist. Ask for the best shot they have! Tell her to drink tons of fluids to plump up her veins. Ask them to use the smallest gauge needle possible to get the sample. Tell her to look away. It is painful to most people. However, I've actually had some expert phlebotomists take samples where I didn't feel a thing and I'm a very hard person to draw from. In any case it doesn't last long.

well first of all to answer number one what does it matter why she is getting it done .kids of all ages have to get blood drawn for many reasons .
well for my kids my sonsand lil girl always panicked and worried over it i always held their hands and tried to keep them focused else where but unbelievably they actually needed to see step by step what was going on. they needed to see them prep the area and get the needle and give them the shot or get the blood drawn which ever may be happening .now for some kids this will freak them . so for the ones that would freak do lil rewards some ideas are stickers ,make up ,books ,ice cream or something to that effect, anything u think she would try for .but through it all stay with her and tell her she will be fine .do not say things like ex: other kids can do it why not u ,it wont hurt ,quit being a baby these are all things that will hurt her emotionally and will make her feel even worse about the shot/blood drawing. also take note even though soem people can give a shot or draw blood and u not feel a thing( i have had some people who just jab u and it hurts )also some shots if getting a shot sting or hurt the arm afterwards alll things to make her not want to get one.her pain tolerance also could be lower so telling her other kids younger than her can do it will def make her feel like crap which i know u do want to do .GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND HER HOPE IT DONT HURT AND SHE DOES GOOD.
GREAT JOB FOR BEING A GOOD MOM TO CARE ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE THIS WITH A SCARED TEEN

Tell your daughter there is nothing to worry about. Years ago some blood tests hurt a bit but now the nurses are so good at drawing blood she would only feel a slight sting for a second, it does not hurt it's mostly in the mind . She does not have to look at the needle tell her to think of some one who is brave and be brave like they were.

My 4 year old has had to have two blood test in the past year, one just last week because of a really high fever... maybe that will help her to relax if she knows that little ones that young go through it too?
I don't like needles either but I find if I turn my head and close my eyes and focus on breathing that it hurts a lot less and goes by faster. It's also nice if you have someone to hold your hand and maybe rub your head.

Hehe, I was a HUGE needle-phobe... I would cry and get very upset, putting my poor mother in your current situation... First off, if she doesn't already, make sure she looks away (and close your eyes), and that she remembers to breathe... Don't hold your breath. The best is when they count and jab you on 2 instead of 3... if they'll do it on the 3rd count, tell her to exhale, which automatically relaxes your body. I dunno, I was always terrified of needles, but I got over it because I got deathly ill and had to get my blood drawn sometimes multiple times per day. She'll realize that although it's not fun, it's very short, and just a fact of life...
Try to just have her breathe in and out deeply, and sing a song in her head, or even let her listen to her ipod or cd player if the phlebotomist will allow it.

I'm fifteen and have had to have multiple tests like that. While I'm not particularly afraid of needles, a few times I was on edge. I listened to my iPod and shut my eyes when the attendant did it. It's really only a few seconds, and doesn't even hurt but for a pinch. And trust me, I'm not big on pain.
Try talking to her throughout it, or giving her something, anything to distract her. ;) When I had to go to the neurologist for a CT, and I needed some dye shot, they even had a ridiculously hot male nurse.

Explain to her that it is just a test, and there is really nothing to hurt her, and even though needles are scarry, they help us find out what is wrong so the doctors can help us more.
I made it a game with my son. I would bet him an ice cream cone that he would freak, LOL.
He would always come out smiling and say "Mom, I really won this time! She made me laugh!"
But boys are different from girls.

getting blood drawn isn't that bad, and take that from the BIGGEST spas with needles. The first time I got a blood test I hyper-ventilated lol, but at the end I ended up saying.. "that was all?!" tell her that
