The best ghostly encounter that I have ever had was at the Castle Inn in New Orleans. http://castleinnofneworleans.com/ There are plenty of ghost stories from various patrons on the website. Here is mine:
Some friends and I spent 4 nights at the Castle Inn in NoLa and had several "ghostly" encounters. The Castle Inn is famous for being haunted by 2 separate ghosts---one, that of a valet who worked and lived there and two, that of a small girl who drowned on the property. (The child is known to haunt several homes in this particular area of the Garden District which was once her family's farmsite.

Anyway, while there, our party was the only one at the Inn and we were accorded some additional courtesies by the management. They gave us the keys to ALL the rooms because we were the only people there and we were interested in hauntings. Anyway, one night the manager left and we were there alone. We were all watching tv in one suite when we heard someone running up the spiral staircase. We all went into the hall, but no one was there. Then we heard running down the staircase but we could SEE there was no one there. A small table in the foyer started shaking violently. It shook us up a bit.

That night, I laid my gaudy earrings on the bedside table and went to sleep. Something woke me in the night and I rolled over onto my earrings. They had been placed onto my bed!

The next night I had a cough and got up to make tea and to avoid waking my roommate. There was a small sitting room off the bathroom and I reclined on the sofa to drink my tea. The toilet flushed right in front of my eyes. No one was there.

My other friends had a problem with someone playing with their room fan over their bed as they slept. Someone (or something) kept turning it on even though they kept turning it off.

Anyway, that's my experiences at the Castle Inn. I never felt threatened in anyway, but I did feel as if someone was trying to make their presence known to us. I hope that is the kind of story you were interested in.

I was once sleeping with my sister and mom in a hotel at night. My eyes were shut and I could hear this weird eery giggling. I looked under my bed but nothing was there, so I went back to sleep. A few moments later, I could hear the giggling again and it sounded like a little girl. I opened my eyes and sure enough, there was a young girl floating inches from my bed giggling. I woke my mom and sister and we all left the hotel the next morning.

I've also heard that right before you die, you see a tall woman dressed in white. Some people have told of stories like this and one woman said that just before her husband had died, he uttered these words, 'Don't take me... My time is not up... the woman... the tall woman dressed in... white.'

If you type in the search bar, I'm not alone? go to the question asked by Molly and that should be interesting for your book. It already has one star.

we went to this haunted farm house and kicked open the side door it felt like the door was a little embraced it was slightly popped open but it was closed before the first kick it was like the ghosts wouldnt let us in.we went to the side door so we wouldnt have no problem kicking the door open was the easiest door to open the front was locked and barracaded. a door slammed shut went we went it in and we had at the end of the corridoor had seen something like it were white and transperant. then we went out front and got into the car and the car died. it was on then it had shut off and didnt want to start. it was like while i was driving that something was following us i know i had seen the same figure following our car in the rear view mirror. i floored the gas pedal and it was following us then it dissapeared. was scary as hell
and also when i was three i had a nightmare that something was sharpening a big knife in a door way we didnt have at the top of the basement stairs it was a work room in my dream. i woke up after seeing a black shadowed figure with red overlarged eyes and when i woke up my bed started to shake violently. i ran downstairs to my aunt and it felt like it was following me all the way to my bedrom door and when i got down stairs my aunt told me i was crazy she was baby sitting and she didnt hear a thing. she told me nothing was true but i think she knew it was there because she was sitting strait up and was looking like she had known it was happening and was scared. but she didnt say anything i think and know and thought it wasnt real possibly but she seemed un affected by it.there wasnt any one else in our

ghosts appears in human forms and disappears and one hears sounds or moving objects. I have several experiences and have seen ghosts in my grandmother house in a long white gown and it was scary because of her appearance and she did not say a mumbling word. I did not see her alone as there was my cousins and sisters there as well and we scream ourselves to sleep because we were so afraid and awaken the next day and told it. I was about 6 years of age and can still and always remember.

Well, I have an automatic light in my bathroom, and it only turns on when someone walks in. When my dog died, it started turning on and stuff in the middle of the night. I ts still does it...not really scary but it gives ME chills.

And I would know if it was someone in my house.

OH YEAHH!! Sorry, third time's a charm.

Well, I was asleep and when I woke up I saw these two glowing red eyes staring at me through my door. They were low to the ground too, and this was also short after my dog died.

Hey I hope that I can help in some way.

Well it really is not much of a hunted place though...I hope that is alright.

My dad told me about a place in Mexico that freaked him out when he went. This place is pretty much like a witch city or something like that. He said that it is like a village or a little town where there are real witches. He said that the town was in the middle of a cementary. He went there with his brother and his sister. When we went to visit my aunt, his sister, I personally asked her if all of this was true and she said that it was.

This is what she told me,"Your dad, our brother, and I went to the little town we call "The Witch Town" because we were curious about it. When one our friends told us about it we did not believe him so what we did was that we decided to go for ourselves and see if it was really true. When we got there, there were witches. Well the people there did look like them. Then after some hours I was sitting down on a chair and one of them asked me, " Are you going to come back?" I said no, and when I tried to get up and finally leave I couldn't. It was as if I was glued to the chair. Then when they asked me the same question again and I said yes, I was finally able to get up and leave. But after that time your dad, our brother, and I never went back to that place again. All three of us got really freaked out about that place."

Well that is what she told me and I hope that I helped in some way.

Good Luck!!!! :)

My husband swears one of the houses they lived in when he was a kid was haunted. they lived in a two family flat in St. Louis, MO and they lived on the second floor. everyone was at home in the living room watching TV. (back then, you only had ONE TV to share with EVERYONE in the house). He said they all heard the front door open, and foot-steps coming up the steps. His dad got up (quite quickly i should add) to see NOTHING coming up the stairs.
another time, in the same house, they had pocket-doors that separated the living room from the rest of the house. they were in the kitchen and yep... you guessed it..the pocket doors OPENED and CLOSED!!! and again, NO ONE was there!
