what kind of crime is it when only a judge can give a sentence and the jury does not have any say in the sentence?

I'm not really sure about this but I think in jury trials the judge can overturn the jury's decision but I think this rarely happens. I don't know if it's the guilt phase, penalty phase or both. I know that Steve Grogan, one of the Manson family killers, the jury recommended the death sentence but the judge overturned it and gave him a life sentence.

The judge gives the sentence when the case doesn't go to trial. Normally when there isn't a reasonable doubt.
