Its always been football in Europe, prior to our, USA, football origin.

The British invented the football in the 18hundred which Italy was the first country to have a club I think and the boll wasn't real round and the British where playing most with the Hans but the Italians developed it with the feet so when the British arrived in north America and brought the sport with then so the kipped the original name football but in Europa they changed as soccer that what I red once if is the truth.

We call it soccer here in the states to prevent confusion with American football, which we just call football. I really don't know why we call american football football, as it isn't even played with your feet, but oh well. just if you're wondering where we actually got the term soccer for football, it somehow comes from term association football, but don't ask me how.
