We had the same thing happen when a sex offender was living a few houses away. I found out by using the state of oregon's sex offender registry. I printed out copies and gave one to all the neighbors and posted them on bulletin boards at the neighborhood stores. It had his picture, his charges, his court ordered restrictions and his address. The sex offender found out because his landlord was confronted by the neighbors. After he found out that everybody was watching him, he left in about 3 days. If you can find out as much as you can about the details of his crime it can help you know exactly what his restrictions may be in regards to where he can reside and rules he must follow to be on release. I would make a flyer with as much info about him as you can get and give it to everyone in the neighborhood and if you can leave one on his door. Let him know that you and everybody else knows what he did. If you can have a neighborhood meeting and start a neighborhood watch program. Some local police departments have programs to help you get started. I think your petition is a great idea after you complete it send him a copy and send on to his landlord if he has one.

There's no good answer to your question. Moving really is the best possible option, but how old are your kids? If they are old enough, tell them honestly your fears. Also, check on the sexual offense. Urinating in public is a sexual offense in some states. You can find more details on your state judicial website. Since I don't know where you live, I cannot give you a link. Google (for example) www.coloradostatejudiciary.com or just google (your state)state court website. Be careful to go to the state court website, not the federal court. I'm sorry this happened to you, but knowledge is power and find out exactly what he did. These cases are public record. You may find his offense had nothing to do with children. It could be rape of a wife or any number of offenses that do not effect children. "Sexual offender" is a very broad category and what is a sexual offense is not the same in every state. Good luck to you.

Are you currently running a daycare? I'm not sure of the laws where you live but in Michigan people are on a probation with a daycare for so many months before getting licensed. If you are he is not permitted to live next door to you. Contact the police and try to get in touch with his probation officer. Something else to do is gather proof. Filming on public streets is legal. If you see him talking with kids record him doing so. Make sure he sees you. You want him to know that people are watching. Take the tape to the kids parents and let them know the conditions of his offenses. Some people are registered offenders as teens from sexting or consensual sex in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship; he is a pedophile, completely different.

I would move away, especially if you have children. If not, get a good security system and a well trained dog. Also, find a church group that will support proactive measures. For instance, distribute fliers at markets and malls with his picture, a map of where he lives, and other relevant information. And you should probably notify the schools in the area, crossing guards, etc., so they will be more alert when watching the children. You might also check with a lawyer to see if there are limits to how much you can publicize the pedophile's presence in your neighborhood. But, I think if the community makes its presence known, theres a chance he will move somewhere else like Egypt or San Francisco. Good luck.

Write your congressman, senetor and contact the authorities. he has to register with the local Police Department.
You can also make sure that everyone in the neighborhood knows what he looks like. Post some pictures with information about him.
Get an alarm system for your home.
Find out what kind of sex offender he is.
Not all of them are child molesters you know. doing something as dumb as coping a feel with a woman's breast can land you in that category so get informed. He might be harmless.

Did you recieve any type of letter stating that a sex offender was moving in? if not, thats a law suit against the release of who ever was holding this sex offender. Yes you need a petition to get him out of your neighborhood. Have everybody around sign it, then notorize it. Take it to your city and see if they can help you from there.

Get Security Cameras and tape his every move towards your place and make the neighborhood aware of his presence. Start a Neigborhood watch in conjuction with police and scare him to death! Become his nightmare. Contact the Guardian Angels, they will be happy to assist you..take self defense courses, check the gun laws in your state and have classes educating both parents and children about pedophiles! Too bad ArchBishop Law escaped to Rome...

First, you could move as many others have suggested. For homeowners, that's not always the easiest option.
I would begin by having a discussion (again) with your kids about taking to strangers, saying no, what to do in the event of wierdness, etc.
Establish a code word for the kids, so if you ever need to get a messag eto them, they can authenticate it came from you. Make sure your neighbors and everyone is aware and be more mindful of your children and their whereabouts at ALL TIMES.

I'd start by getting more information. What was the person convicted of? If its statatory rape, I wouldn't worry. Find out if they're in any kind of treatment program. Talk to your family about this up front. This isn't something to ignore. Knowledge can go a long ways.
