It is the speed at which a sound wave moves. If you stand a hundred feet or so in front of a large building or other vertical surface and make a sharp noise, you will hear the echo about 0.2 seconds later, because the sound from the noise, traveling at about 1000 feet per second, takes that long to reach the building and bounce back to you.

The speed of sound varies with tempatrure and pressure. Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier (traveled faster than the speed of sound) and lived on 10/14/1947.
Now do your other homework.:)

I means how fast sound travels though air. It is about 730 mph. So when a sound is produced, say by a hammer hitting something metal, it takes a while from the time you see that until you hear it. Sound travels fairly slowly - it takes 5 seconds to go a mile.

The speed of sound is 330 meters per second. Miles per hour won't really help you if you're trying to do a physics problem.

It is the speed at which a compression/rarefaction or pressure wave travels thru a medium. The speed of sound thru a solid is generally faster than thru a liquid, which is generally faster than thru a gas.
