The gold was in underground vaults its ok.
The amount of scrap metal and other debris made it imperative to clean up the area quickly, and there isn't anyplace to put it in Downtown NYC. If it weren't removed quickly, it couldn't be cleared and there couldn't have been any progress in the search.
What they did was evil enough don't go looking for what isn't there.

Rudy had no choice. Its our government who is to blame.
Either way, after killing several hundred people, the last thing you want to do is allow evidence to sit around where it might be picked up and examined.
