Hitcher's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
anything by Issac Asimov (I, Robot and Foundation esp.),
anything by Neil Gaiman (American Gods is great)
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut (this is in Literature but I think would qualify as sci-fi)

I'm a huge fan of Robert Heinlein and was hooked by my husband (who happens to be a 24 year old guy). My favorite is "I Will Fear No Evil" which is about an old man who's brain is transplanted into a body of a 24 year old woman. Very fun book. However, most purists would recommend "Stranger in a Strange Land" (also good) about a human that was born on Mars (technically a Martian then) who comes to Earth and how he changes the entire world with his views.

I, Robot by Isaac Asimov is a great read. And it's fun to compare it to the movie, which is only BASED on the book, so they're not really that similar. But still. I like it!

I agree with Doc's choices.
You could also consider:
"House of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer
"Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein
